RFP FOOD SAFETY PRACTICES
In alignment with the Food Banks of Canada, the Ranchlands Food Pantry adheres to the following guidelines for distributing items beyond their best before dates (BBD). BBD indicates overall quality including taste and texture, but does not relate to food safety:
– Bread: 1 week past BBD
– Dairy products: 2 weeks past BBD
– Produce: 1-4 weeks past BBD
– Frozen ground meats: 2 months past BBD
– Dried/packaged goods or frozen whole meats: Up to 6 months past BBD
– Canned goods: Up to 18 months past BBD
On some occasions we may repackage bulk quanities (eg. rice, flour) into smaller portions to enable distribution to multiple households. In these circumstances, volunteers will open and re-package dry goods in the Ranchlands Community Association AHS approved kitchen, following all safe food handling practices. Packages will be clearly labelled with the product information as well as the date of repackaging.
